Onyinye Faith
Mbanefo

Founder & Executive Director, Onyinye Mbanefo Foundation
She founded OMF on a simple conviction: that no one who spent a lifetime giving to others should spend their final years unseen. Today she leads a growing movement for the dignity, safety, and rights of older Nigerians.
HER STORY

A journey that began at her grandparent's bedside

Onyinye grew up watching the older people in her family carry entire households on their backs, only to be quietly forgotten once they could no longer work. It was while caring for her own grandfather alongside her grandmother in his final years, navigating a healthcare system with almost nothing built for the elderly, and a community that treated his decline as an inconvenience — that Onyinye saw the gap she would spend her life trying to close.

Trained in public health and social work, she spent years working alongside community health workers across southern Nigeria, documenting cases of elder neglect and abuse that rarely made it into any official record. What she found convinced her that older adults needed more than sympathy — they needed an organization built entirely around them.

In founding the Onyinye Mbanefo Foundation, she brought that conviction into the open: a Nigeria where growing old is met with respect, not silence — and where every caregiver has the tools to meet it with care instead of guilt.

“My vision is a Nigeria where age is never an excuse to be overlooked — where every older adult can live with dignity, purpose, and the security of knowing someone is watching out for them.
